Salmonella 101
Salmonella bacteria sicken as many as 1.2 million Americans annually, according to the latest statistics from the CDC. Salmonella produce an illness called salmonellosis, which can develop anywhere from 12 hours to three days after eating contaminated food.
Symptoms can last up to a week and generally include:
- diarrhea
- abdominal pain and vomiting
- fever and chills.
Most people recover on their own, but sometimes diarrhea becomes so severe that hospitalization is required. The CDC estimates that of those 1.2 million annual cases, 23,000 victims will need to be hospitalized. Approximately 450 of them will die.
People most at risk for complications are children younger than 5, pregnant women, senior citizens, and people with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are at a higher risk for contracting salmonellosis because their immune systems are suppressed due to hormonal changes. A pregnant woman who contracts salmonellosis can suffer miscarriage, premature labor, or even stillbirth.
