There have been two major boat explosions in the state of Missouri in the past month.

Gasoline fumes are the major cause of boat explosions, and because they usually happen when people are on board, they often cause serious injuries.

Here is a look at the two recent boat explosions in the state of Missouri:

injures 5, sends 3 to hospital

From KSPR-33 News in Springfield: A Shell Knob boat explosion at Kings River Marina on Table Rock Lake left five people injured and sent three of them to the hospital. The explosion occurred at about 1 p.m. Saturday.

“They fueled it here at the marina, they reportedly had some issues getting the boat started, couldn’t get it started, eventually moments thereafter is when the explosion occurred,” said Rusty Rickard with the Central Crossing Fire Department.

People nearby said they heard three loud booms when the boat exploded.

Quick response from nearby

Stephen Williams was just across the dock getting ready to fuel up.

“We were still in our boat on the other side of the gas pump,” Williams said. “Once the boat exploded it blew two people out the back of the boat a man and a lady into the water.

“We tried to help get them out of the water. One of the guys that was with us threw a life jacket to her, they had burns on their heads, arms, and legs.”

Dwane Boggs, owner of King’s River Marina, said his crew were some of the first to respond.

“The kids were out there, bravely, running the fire extinguishers, and got them off of there because the fire continued to break out on the boat,” Boggs said.

Others in the area said they did what they could to get away from the burning boat.

“We ended up moving our boat out of there because smoke and ash was coming over on to our boat and I was afraid it would blow up as well so we moved out boat over a little ways away and then the gasoline pump exploded,” Williams said.

Woman flown to hospital

Rickard said one woman was taken by helicopter to a hospital, and two others who were injured were taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Boggs said the marina has a plan in place in case something like this happens.

“That’s why we have the emergency shut off valve for all of the pumps,” he said.

The cause of the Shell Knob boat explosion is still unknown.

Shell Knob boat explosion injures 5 in Missouri

A Shell Knob boat explosion at Kings River Marina on Table Rock Lake left five people injured and sent three of them to the hospital. On June 15, five people from Kansas City – including a 6-year-old girl – were injured in a boat explosion on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri (pictured).

Shell Knob boat explosion:
Missouri hit hard lately

Exactly a month ago, on June 15, five people from Kansas City – including a 6-year-old girl – were injured in a boat explosion on Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. Lake of the Ozarks is a large reservoir created by impounding the Osage River in the northern part of the Ozarks in the central part of the state.

That blast also occurred in the early afternoon, and happened as the 1993 Chris-Craft vessel was being refueled at the Millstone Marina Gas Dock.

Investigators attributed the explosion to a lack of ventilation and mechanical failure.

Patrick Baber, 39, was ejected from the boat into the water, where he was later rescued. Carl Harris, 42, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital.

An ambulance took boat owner and driver Robert Baber, 71; Patrick Baber; the girl, and a woman identified as Cynthia Sterling, 48, to a hospital. They suffered moderate injuries. The girl, Kathryn Harris, was the only one wearing a safety device, officials said.
