The deli counter at a Stop & Shop in Warwick, RI, has been temporarily closed because of concerns of contamination by Listeria monocytogenes, a Stop & Shop spokesman said.
Some sliced meat and cheese sold at the Stop & Shop at 300 Quaker Lane between Jan. 18 and Feb. 2 may have been exposed to Listeria, the spokesman said.
Listeria is a foodborne pathogen that can produce listeriosis when contaminated food is consumed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Symptoms can include a stiff neck, headache, confusion, convulsions and a fever. About 1,600 people are diagnosed with Listeria infection annually, the CDC reports.
“While we have received no confirmed illnesses, out of an abundance of caution, we temporarily closed the deli service case for meats and cheeses,” a statement read. “We hope to reopen this area very soon.”
Customers who have questions are asked to speak with store management (401-828-9360). The deli counter is the only area of the store affected; the rest of the store remains open.
